What is Low Vision?

Low Vision refers to a visual condition that cannot be corrected by conventional eyeglasses or contact lenses or through surgical or pharmacologic means. A variety of disorders that affect the eye (many age-related) can cause an individual to become visually impaired and these include: Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, and Retinitis Pigmentosa.

Is Low Vision common?

Yes! Low Vision is actually the third most commonly occurring physical impairment in those over 65, exceeded only by heart disease and arthritis. Many who are visually impaired have found help with their vision problem through Low Vision Care.

What are the causes of Low Vision?

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of Low Vision, followed by other eye diseases, such as Diabetic RetinopathyGlaucoma and Retinitis Pigmentosa. A variety of other conditions, such as in-operable or pre-operative Cataracts can also lead to Low Vision. Stargartds and other hereditary diseases can also cause impaired vision.

How does Low Vision affect me?

Many activities of daily living (ADLs) are restricted due to the central or peripheral field loss that occurs with eye diseases that cause vision loss. The visually impaired may have difficulty reading, writing, watching television, spotting objects from a distance, and enjoying their hobbies. However, with the right low vision aids and training, many Low Vision patients can once again perform their daily activities, thereby regaining much of their lost independence.

When should I see an eye care professional if I think I have Low Vision?

Contact an eye care professional right away to make sure that the underlying eye disease is treated. One of the keys to success in dealing with Low Vision issues is to start early. When you think you are only slightly to moderately visually impaired, you can start off on easy-to-use low vision aids. If, and when, the condition progresses, causing a need for higher powered magnification devices, you will have already developed the basic skills necessary to use low vision devices successfully.

What are the symptoms of Low Vision?

When you have difficulty seeing and reading small print, even with glasses, contacts or medication – you may have Low Vision.
